The first time I saw a reverse glass decoupage plate, I didn’t know what I was seeing. I thought it was some wonderfully painted piece of china and it has been magical to me ever since. I was thrilled with Ralph Lauren’s china clock plate but no way could I afford them. What a perfect excuse to knock off Mr. Lauren and do a little reverse glass collage.
Download the dial here and print.
Cut a piece of white tissue paper the size of a piece of card stock and tape it to the top with masking tape.
Place the printed dial on the bed of a copy machine and hand feed the tissue paper/cardstock sandwich through the machine until you have a clock dial printed on your tissue.
Bed, Bath and Beyond sells boxes of 6 clear glass salad plates CHEAP or do what I did and go to the Goodwill. They always seem to have stray glass plates. Turn it upside down.

Now comes the tricky part. Slather a generous amount of white glue on the middle and CAREFULLY place the tissue. Lift each side, paint glue onto the plate, then gently place the tissue back down. Continue around until everything is stuck down.
I’d like to say that I did this on purpose, but impatient me tried to touch the fragile wet tissue paper and tore it. Not to worry. I used my heat gun to dry the gluey tissue (which actually happened quite quickly) and touched up the ripped number with a black Sharpie.
I scraped off the wadded up glued tissued with an exacto blade, leaving a torn edge around the hole. A torn edge is easier to disguise than a cut one. I tore small pieces of tissue and glued then into place.
It shows now, but don’t fret, you won’t see it in the finished piece. You can see that I goofed near the second hand as well; that will disappear.
When the tissue is dry, Spray paint the back with several light coats of white paint.
You can use these as plates for a meal, but since you can’t submerge them in water or put in a dishwasher, serve something that can be cleaned off with a damp sponge. Or use this like I do, tucked in a bookcase or hung on a wall.
Eat your heart out Ralphie boy.
