I wish they still made leather top tables, don’t you? There’s just something so sophisticated about them. Maybe they are still in production and I just don’t know it…we’ll have to do some research!

Which leads us to the story of this beauty. When we picked up this table from our amazing friend and fellow vintage lover, Tammy, we knew it would be something special. With those gorgeous French legs and generous tabletop, how could it not be?

Although this table had great lines and solid structure, there were, unfortunately, large cigarette burn holes in the leather. So we knew without question that it would have to be removed. Sigh…such a waste. But we may or may not still have the leather tucked away somewhere in case inspiration strikes 🙂

Luckily for us, Kayla over at Confessions of a DIY-aholic had done an absolutely beautiful re-vamp of a similar table using none other than textured wallpaper! What a great idea! We knew it would be the perfect fit for this piece in need of a new top.

After much pulling and tugging, we removed the leather from the tabletop and sanded the whole piece down. Since the area needing to be covered was wider than the wallpaper, there was lots of measuring, applying, removing, re-measuring and re-applying to ensure the design was perfectly centered and straight. We used Mod Podge to decoupage the wallpaper onto the table.

Once the wallpaper was down, the legs got two coats of CeCe Caldwell’s Vintage White, while the entire top, wallpaper included, was given several coats of stain. A few coats of clear wax and polycrylic later, we were done!

Here’s a tip: When staining the wallpaper, be prepared with some cheesecloth or paper towel to gently wipe some of the stain off of the raised areas of the wallpaper – this will highlight the design and create more contrast.

If we had to choose a favorite of our projects so far, this might just be it. This table got lots of interest, so we’d like to think other people liked it, too 🙂 A few simple techniques, and this table was given a whole new life, and with a brand new home!
