If I had to guess, I’d say that 80-90% of the pieces we work on are project pieces in the truest sense – as in, side of the road, falling apart, complete overhaul kinds of pieces. As satisfying as it is to transform them, it’s always a nice surprise to find something that is in relatively good condition and just needs a little facelift.
When I purchased this chest of drawers from the family of an elderly woman who had passed, I knew I just had to do it justice in honor of her. She had clearly taken impeccable care of it – it was in great shape! It had been some time since I’d worked on a French Provincial dresser, so I was really excited to get my hands on this one.
I decided to go for a classic look. First, a base coat of General Finishes Milk Paint in Driftwood, applied with my HomeRight sprayer and ClingOn brush. I’m a big fan of this color – it’s the same one I used to create the Restoration Hardware inspired finish on my burlap rocking chair.
Then, I added some Pitch Black Glaze by General Finishes to add some more dimension. I finished the whole piece off with High Performance Topcoat in Flat.
I loved the patina of the original brass hardware, so I just gave it a bit of cleaning and called it a day. I think it complements the dresser beautifully just the way it is.
I still don’t quite believe that I didn’t even have to break out the wood filler or electric sander for this one!
